Huntercombe Golf Club

Huntercombe is a fantastic inland course located near Henley, about a 20-minute drive from Oxford. This is where, from October 2011 onwards, the OUGC Blues Squad will be based, with events such as trial rounds, the OUGC Matchplay Championship and infrequent home matches taking place here. We are fortunate enough to have enjoyed a long and warm relationship with Huntercombe and recent developments have served to strengthen this relationship for the future. As one of the most pleasant golfing environments in the country, we feel privileged to call Huntercombe the Home of the Blues.

Witney Lakes Golf Club

Witney Lakes is the base for our coach John Cook. At Witney Lakes, John has his very own ´School of Golf´, which is where the weekly training sessions take place. The practice facilities are nothing short of excellent, and the standard of Oxford Golf is certainly benefiting from John and his facilities. The Club also kindly allow us to make use of the course when we desire, for which we are grateful.

Oxford Golf Club

Recently renamed from Southfield GC, Oxford GC remains the home of Oxford University Golf Club as a whole, and indeed we are one of its three constitutive clubs. Membership at Oxford GC is available to all matriculated students of the University for £175 per annum (5-day). There are also deals in place for members of staff. Further details about the Club can be found by visiting the Club´s website: http://www.oxfordgolfclub.net/

The Week´s Schedule...

Wednesday: This is the club’s day for team trials and practice. When we trial, we play 18 holes at Southfield and submit a medal score to the team committees. Our coaching team arranges different practice schedules for each team but be sure the teams for the weekend are all picked on Wednesday evening so whether you are trialling or practicing make sure you put in a good performance. The teams are also selected on prior weekend performances and past results.

Friday: We meet up in our teams at Binsey Golf Range at 6pm to make sure our swings are in the slot.

Saturday: We wake up early and travel to our first club fixture of the weekend. We arrive and meet our opposition, often over a bacon roll and a coffee before heading out onto the course. We play matchplay foursomes in the morning. This is when two players play one ball alternate shot, teeing off on alternate holes, against another pair doing the same. Foursomes is a fantastic format which produces some really great matches.

After the foursomes, we are often invited into the clubhouse for lunch with our opponents. If you’re worried that you will not eat as well as you would like at university then playing golf will certainly alleviate any concerns you might have had. It is truly astonishing the quality, variety and quantity of superlative cuisine that is laid on for us every weekend. You will certainly become a connoisseur of roast meats, cheeses and fine wines.

In the afternoon, we play matchplay singles. Since the majority of the match points are available in the afternoon, this is when the match is won or lost. When all is said and done, we gather in the clubhouse and bid our farewells to people some of whom we’ve only known for a day but all of whom we can call friends.

Seven or eight weekends a year we are invited to stay on Saturday evening with our opponent club’s members. We often have a blacktie dinner in the clubhouse before heading back to our host’s house for the rest of the evening. This is always great fun, the stories which can be told of incredible conversations, extraordinary events and the huge generosity of our hosts are endless.

On Sunday we do the whole thing all over again......
