The return of the talismanic Thomas Smith Esq. guides Oxford to a double-win weekend Luffenham Heath Golf Club 8 - 10 University of Oxford Although well-established, the Oxford golfing calendar is an evolving entity as fixtures come and go. And the most recent addition to the list - a fixture against the honorable members of Luffenham Heath - brought unanimity to the team; the fixture list is better for the change. The day was very pleasurable, made maybe more so by the eventual score line. Throughout the day, the match remained in the balance with a strong Oxford side feeling the effects of the plentiful hospitality of the Luffenham members on Saturday evening. With wins from Ghorpade/Jackson, Slowther/Smith, and Salonen/Hind, the buttress of the team ensured that odd was even at lunch with the score at three-a-piece. Lunch, the second of three meals provided by the Club on the day, was the catalyst for a strong afternoon performance from the University. Hair of the dog for many players aided the Oxford cause - not only were the necessary seven singles victories secured, but many were taken by great margins. Jackson (7/6), Ghorpade (6/5), Upcott Gill and Mercurio (5/4) were all clinical post-lunch. Almost as clinical as the opponents of Hoolahan, Wells, Smith and van Wijk who were all shoed. Thoughts of the day´s affairs were exchanged over dinner as the two teams made what we hope to be long-lasting friendships. Before departure, the Oxford team were stunned to learn that OUGC cyberspace has become a national journalistic treasure as quotes were read from a selection of the site´s articles by the host captain. Suggestions that the content of such articles is not entirely factual were quickly quashed and all subscribers can be reassured that ougc.com remains the nation´s premier factual golf blog. |
